Charleston, W.Va. –
This week’s spotlight is Staff Sgt. Martin Joel Patricio, who has served in the West Virginia Army National Guard for 11 years, demonstrating dedication and adaptability throughout his career. Originally from Hollywood, Florida, Patricio now calls Morgantown, West Virginia, his home.
Patricio is a 92Y supply specialist currently assigned to logistics at the Training Center at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, West Virginia. Patricio is responsible for ensuring units have the barracks, classrooms and other necessities to accomplish their training objectives.
His journey with the WVARNG began with Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 201st Field Artillery Regiment as a 92F petroleum supply specialist, where he served for eight years. He later supported the 201st FA in the S4 section before reclassifying to 92Y supply. Following his reclassification, he took an Active Guard Reserve position with Bravo Battery, 201st FA in Morgantown.
A graduate with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, Patricio balances his military career with a civilian role in law enforcement for the Department of Homeland Security, specializing in transportation security. Outside of work, he enjoys running, hiking and traveling to explore new places.
Known for his reliability and versatility, Patricio is the go-to person in his battalion, often stepping up to support tasks beyond his assigned position. He credits his ability to overcome challenges to the trust and mentorship he has received from WVARNG leadership, which has helped him grow personally and professionally.
Reflecting on his time in the Guard, Patricio recalls a moment during the COVID-19 pandemic, when task forces were established. Witnessing the WVNG’s ability to adapt and support communities during a crisis reinforced his pride in being part of the organization.
Patricio values the 201st Field Artillery Regiment’s commitment to taking care of its Soldiers, ensuring they are informed about career opportunities. His advice to potential recruits is to trust in leadership and embrace the camaraderie within the Guard.
“Through all the training and obstacles, you will see how the people to your left and right build a bond with you,” he said.
