W.Va. Guard Responds to Flood Emergency
August 28, 2023
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice declared a State of Emergency in five counties impacted by an excessive rainfall event that occurred during the early morning hours of August 28, 2023. Up to 9.1 inches of precipitation fell in some areas of eastern Kanawha County, resulting in the National Weather Service declaring multiple Flash Flood Warnings and a rare Flash Flood Emergency alert. Assets from the West Virginia National Guard (WVNG), including the All-Hazards Swift Water Rescue Team, and aerial assets including UH-72 Lakota and UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters, were immediately put into a standby status and began prepping for emergency dispatch per standard domestic operations emergency procedures, in coordination with the West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD). Soldiers and Airmen from the West Virginia and District of Columbia National Guard compete in the West Virginia National Guard Best Warrior Competition held April 19-21, 2024, at Camp Dawson in Kingwood, West Virginia. Best Warrior is an annual event where participants compete in a series of warrior training tasks including weapons proficiency on the M4 rifle, 9mm pistol, land navigation, physical fitness, combat first aid, tactical movements, communications, and professional development activities.
