“Today’s events have brought an extremely somber and serious tone to this Thanksgiving. Two of our West Virginia National Guardsmen were shot in our nation’s capital while performing their duties ensuring the safety and security of the citizens of the District of Columbia. This brutal attack was senseless and entirely unprovoked. In times like these, my thoughts not only linger on those brave Guardsmen but also their families, friends, and their fellow service members. I would like to extend my profound gratitude to the first responders, doctors, and nurses who cared for our members. I am thankful for the swift action taken by the courageous fellow West Virginia National Guardsmen who quickly engaged and neutralized the assailant, saving lives. Further, we are overwhelmed at the outpouring of prayers from civilian and military leaders, as well as individuals throughout West Virginia and the nation. I ask that you continue to pray and to hold your loved ones close this Thanksgiving. As Soldiers and Airmen, we defend this nation and serve our state with pride, professionalism, and patriotism. We are so excited to send you the 2025 WVNG Kids Kamp/Camp Conley applications! Our 2025 program theme from NGB this year is “National Guard Kids: Your Adventure Starts Here!” and let me say this camp is most certainly an adventure! The schedule looks amazing, and we have so much fun packed into it including camp traditions such as firing ranges, EST, static displays, high line, fishing, swimming, rappel tower, drill & ceremony, and camp dance! We have some amazing end-of-camp plans underway, but it will be hard to top the carnival last year. We are surely going to try our best! Don’t miss out, register today. As a recap: • Dates: 22-27 June 2025 • Location: Camp Dawson, Kingwood WV • For who: Military dependents ages 9-14, TagAlongs ages 5-8 • Cost: o Campers, ages 9-14: $100 if registered between now and 1 April. Late registration goes from 2 April to 15 May and will be $125.00 o TagALongs, ages 5-8: $75.00 if registered between now and 1 April. Sale served as the first State Command Sergeant Major of the West Virginia Army National Guard from January 1971 - January 1975 and again from January 1986 until his retirement in 1990.

Governor Patrick Morrisey today formally announced that the State of West Virginia has requested the posthumous award of the Purple Heart for U.S. Army Specialist Sarah Beckstrom and the same honor for Air Force Staff Sergeant Andrew Wolfe of the West Virginia National Guard for their service and sacrifice while protecting the nation’s capital in Washington, D.C. WVNG Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim Seward (at podium) joined Governor Morrisey to support the call for that highest honor for the Guardsmen.

Spc. Sarah Beckstrom laid to rest at W.Va. National Cemetery

Evalea Beckstrom and West Virginia Adjutant General Maj. Gen. Jim D. Seward embrace during U.S. Army Spc. Sarah Beckstrom's committal service at the West Virginia National Cemetery in Grafton, West Virginia, Dec. 9, 2025. Beckstrom, a military police officer with the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade, West Virginia Army National Guard, was laid to rest with full military honors during the ceremony and interment. Beckstrom died on Nov. 27, 2025 due to a gunshot wound received when she was ambushed by a gunman while on patrol near the Farragut Square Metro Station in Washington, D.C. the previous day. Beckstrom was 20 years old and had served 2 years and 5 months in the West Virginia National Guard.
