West Virginia National Guard Welcomes New Inspector General

Maj. Gen. James Seward, the Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard, administered the oath of responsibility to Air Force Col. Steven Niewiarowski as the new WVNG State Inspector General during a ceremony at Joint Force Headquarters on August 19, 2025.

As Inspector General, Niewiarowski will serve on the Adjutant General’s special staff, ensuring readiness, accountability, and resiliency across the organization. His duties include overseeing inspections, leading TAG-directed investigations, and providing training and assistance for Soldiers, Airmen, civilian employees, families, and the community.

“I am honored to be assigned as the WVNG IG,” said Niewiarowski, “I look forward to gaining the community's trust and confidence as I become a member of the West Virginia family.”

Niewiarowski arrives from Osan Air Base, Republic of Korea, where he served as Chief of Combat Operations for Air Forces Korea, Combined Air Component Command. A Title 10 Airman with more than 25 years of active-duty service, he has held assignments in combat flying units, command staffs, and training organizations. As a command pilot, he has logged more than 4,700 flight hours in multiple aircraft.

“We are proud to welcome Col. Niewiarowski to our team,” said Seward. “His experience and leadership will be invaluable in maintaining the strength and integrity of our force.”
