Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew Mackey: Dedication and Expertise in Service to the WVNG

 This week’s Spotlight is Chief Warrant Officer 2 Matthew Mackey, a 15-year veteran of the West Virginia Army National Guard, who brings an impressive background in cybersecurity and critical infrastructure protection to his role. From Clarksburg, West Virginia, he currently resides in Saint Albans and serves as a 255A Port Security Assessment Team Lead for the United States Coast Guard conducting security and vulnerability assessments across the country.

Mackey’s career with the WVARNG includes assignments with the 156th Military Police Detachment and 2/19 Special Forces Group. He also served with the CBRNE and Critical Infrastructure Protection Battalions under the Advanced Individual Training Center (AITEC). He holds a Bachelor of Science in cybersecurity and has a keen interest in outdoor activities, including camping, hiking, and biking.

With an adaptable mindset, Mackey emphasizes the importance of continuous learning, especially in areas beyond one's immediate expertise, as the key to his value in both military and civilian contexts. His career goals include advancing to the rank of chief warrant officer 4 and earning a master’s degree in cybersecurity. He joined the WVARNG for personal and professional development, inspired by his grandfather and several uncles who also served.

One of his most cherished memories is his first deployment, which offered invaluable life experiences and a profound sense of responsibility. He also fondly recalls jumping from a CH-47 alongside a close friend, highlighting the camaraderie and adventure that make WVARNG service unique. CW2 Mackey greatly values the Guard’s evolving “family first” mentality and the organization’s commitment to helping its members thrive.
