KEARNEYSVILLE, W.Va. –
As the we prepare to celebrate National Aviation Day tomorrow, Aug. 15, 2024, the West Virginia National Guard would like to Spotlight Maj. David J. Groom, a dedicated pilot with 21 years of military service. Groom, who resides in Kearneysville, W.Va., currently serves as a C-17 Pilot and the 167th Airlift Wing Operations Group Executive Officer and Standards/Evaluations Liaison Officer.
Throughout his career, Groom has held many roles, including C-130 and C-5 Loadmaster, C-5 Pilot, and Aircrew Training Officer. Along with his educational background with an Associate of Applied Science in Airfield Operations Management from the Community College of the Air Force, a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from West Virginia University, and an MBA with a concentration in Homeland Security Resource Allocation from American Military University.
Outside of his military duties, Groom enjoys motorcycle riding, camping, exercising, reading, and bike riding. Having served seven years as an enlisted airman before commissioning, he brings experience and perspective in all his roles.
Groom has many aspirations, include becoming a C-17 Instructor and Evaluator Pilot, achieving the rank of O-5 in 2024, and eventually becoming a squadron commander. Reflecting on his career, some of his favorite milestones are graduating from Basic Military Training and reaching all of the many milestones in his flying career.
Groom joined the military after the 9/11 attacks, driven to serve his country. He values the West Virginia National Guard's dedication to its mission and the many relationships he’s build in the Guard. He is particularly proud of being involved in the Aeromedical Evacuation missions, where he had a role in providing care to injured service members.
As the WVNG celebrates National Aviation Day and reflects on Airborne Day, we are proud to have Groom as part of our One Guard Family.
