In an era defined by complex and unconventional conflicts, the Ridge Runner Irregular Warfare Exercise (RR IWX) serves as a unique and vital training platform for U.S. Special Operations Forces (USSOF), key allies, and strategic partners.

RR IWX is a dynamic multi-national Irregular Warfare (IW) exercise, designed to support lethality and resilience, validate USSOF readiness, and foster crucial interoperability by building common ground and lifelong relationships that span the globe.

What makes RR IWX unique?

Real-World Relevance: RR IWX provides a flexible and realistic Irregular Warfare (IW) training environment, preparing forces for the complexities of operating in permissive, contested, and denied areas, often within civilian populations. RR IWX executes across five lanes in West Virginia and two lanes in South Carolina.

SOF Validation & Readiness: The exercise offers a low-cost, high-value platform for validating deploying USSOF elements and assessing overall IW readiness. Commanders gain critical insights into their units’ capabilities.

Cutting-Edge Technology Integration: RR IWX actively collaborates with the defense industry and academia, putting innovative technologies directly into the hands of operators for testing, experimentation, and future force development. This accelerates the adoption of game-changing capabilities.

Strong International Partnerships: RR IWX fosters collaboration with a growing network of allies and partners, The exercise is strategically expanding its focus to the INDOPACOM region, with scheduled participation from INDOPACOM nations.

Dedicated Training Cycle: The exercise incorporates three days of IW focused academic instruction, delivered by leading institutions such as the Irregular Warfare Center, Joint Special Operations University, and technology leaders followed by three days of intensive, isolated mission planning, and finally seven to eight days of practical, kinetic and non-kinetic operations alongside partner forces.

RR IWX utilizes transformative technologies and training aids throughout the varied terrain of West Virginia and a portion of the coastlines of National Guard partner states, providing urban, rural, austere, rugged, and/or amphibious operational environments.

RR IWX enables the USSOF CV2 pathway of “certify, verify, and validate” to ensure deploying units are Ridge Runner’s number one priority.
