W.Va. Guard Prepares for Flood ResponseUniversity
West Virginia Governor Jim Justice declared a State of Emergency in five counties impacted by an excessive rainfall event that occurred during the early morning hours of August 28, 2023. Up to 9.1 inches of precipitation fell in some areas of eastern Kanawha County, resulting in the National Weather Service declaring multiple Flash Flood Warnings and a rare Flash Flood Emergency alert. Assets from the West Virginia National Guard (WVNG), including the All-Hazards Swift Water Rescue Team, and aerial assets including UH-72 Lakota and UH-60M Blackhawk helicopters, were immediately put into a standby status and began prepping for emergency dispatch per standard domestic operations emergency procedures, in coordination with the West Virginia Emergency Management Division (WVEMD).
