West Virginia National Guard mission in Washington, D.C. to continue

As recently announced by Governor Patrick Morrisey, the West Virginia National Guard will continue its mission in Washington, D.C. through the remainder of the year, supporting ongoing efforts to assist with public safety operations in the nation’s capital.  

Members of the West Virginia National Guard have been serving in Washington, D.C. since August 2025 as part of the D.C. National Guard Joint Task Force. In that role, WVNG personnel have provided logistics support, administrative and public affairs support, Joint Staff augmentation, and both static and roving presence patrols. Their continued presence reflects the Guard’s longstanding tradition of answering the call when needed, whether at home or across the nation.  

“West Virginia’s Soldiers and Airmen continue to demonstrate exceptional professionalism and dedication while supporting operations in Washington, D.C.,” said Maj. Gen. Jim Seward, Adjutant General of the West Virginia National Guard. “Their presence reflects the trust placed in the West Virginia National Guard and our commitment to supporting public safety missions wherever we are needed.” 

The West Virginia National Guard remains committed to supporting this mission while ensuring the readiness and welfare of its Soldiers and Airmen. Through their service, the men and women of the Guard continue to represent the state of West Virginia with distinction.  

“This continued mission underscores the readiness of the West Virginia National Guard and the selfless service of our men and women in uniform,” Seward said. “We remain focused on accomplishing the mission while taking care of our Soldiers, Airmen, and their families, who make this service possible.”  

The West Virginia National Guard has a long and proud history of service in both domestic and overseas missions, providing assistance in emergencies, protecting critical infrastructure, and supporting national defense priorities.
