CHARLESTON, W.Va. –
Red Ribbon Week was observed with a new event this year aimed at promoting substance abuse prevention. Samuel Reeder, the West Virginia Army National Guard Substance Abuse Prevention coordinator, partnered with the West Virginia Air National Guard 130th Airlift Wing Fire and Rescue Dept. to host a Jaws of Life demonstration at Joint Forces Headquarters on Oct. 28, 2024, followed by a resource fair and a movie with popcorn in the Drill Hall.
“The Jaws of Life demonstration reminds us that the impact of substance impaired driving can extend beyond the financial and disciplinary consequences," said Reeder. "Substance impaired driving and distracted driving can result in considerable damage, injury, and loss of life.”
“I’m incredibly grateful to our 130th AW Fire Dept. for showcasing their life-saving devices and techniques for us during Red Ribbon Week this year," he said. "They were gracious presenters as well, answering all questions and making sure that spectators understood what was happening throughout the demonstration.”
Substance abuse prevention is a cornerstone of Red Ribbon Week, which runs from October 23rd to October 31st. This initiative encourages individuals to pledge to live a healthy, drug-free lifestyle and raises awareness about the dangers of drug abuse.
Substance abuse is a significant issue within the Reserve and National Guard, exacerbated by factors like stress and trauma. Alcohol, prescription drugs, and illicit substances like fentanyl are commonly misused, posing risks to individual health and military readiness. Studies indicate significant numbers of alcohol use disorders among both active-duty service members and veterans, with alcohol use being more prevalent than that of illicit drugs.
The WVNG is committed to supporting service members affected by their own or someone else’s substance abuse. Reeder said there are programs and steps in place for Guard Members who want to get help maintaining a healthy, drug-free, sober lifestyle.
Red Ribbon Week is the nation's oldest and largest drug prevention awareness program, targeting K-12 students and communities nationwide. Throughout the week, various activities are planned, including themed dress-up days, classroom activities, poster contests, and school-wide pledges to stay drug-free.
These events aim to foster early conversations about making healthy choices and the impact of substance abuse on individuals and families. For more information on Red Ribbon Week activities and how to get involved, visit the national event website at www.redribbon.org.
