By Erica Bodker West Virginia National Guard

Cpt. Andrew M. Tanner, from Sunrise, Ohio, has served in the West Virginia Army National Guard for 11 years and was chosen to be a September 2024 Spotlight. Currently serving with the Fixed Wing Army Aviation Training Site in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Tanner’s role involves responsibilities in the unit's operations and planning. His experience as a pilot includes flying the C-12 Huron aircraft and UH-60 Blackhawk and OH-58 Kiowa helicopters.

Tanner earned a Bachelor of Arts from West Virginia University in 2013. In addition to his military service, he is a commercial pilot for United Airlines. His hobbies also include spending time with his family and outdoor activities.

One of Tanner’s unique skills is his commercial pilot experience, which complements his military flying background. His personal goals revolve around being a dedicated husband and father, while his professional aspirations include becoming an instructor pilot and advancing his career to larger opportunities and positions.
After joining the military initially through WVU’s ROTC program, Tanner was drawn to the culture, camaraderie and opportunities offered. His favorite moments in the Guard include becoming a pilot and the educational and career benefits.

Some of Tanner proudest moments are becoming a father, and he considers marrying his wife the best day of his life.

He values the relationships he has built and the career path the WVNG has provided. His advice to any prospective enlistees or employees is to recognize the life-changing opportunities that the WVNG offers.

At 33 years old, Tanner continues to make significant contributions to both his state and nation through his military and civilian roles, embodying the dedication and excellence of the West Virginia National Guard.
