Spotlight: SSG Anthony Jones

By Erica Bodker West Virginia National Guard

The West Virginia National Guard Spotlight for July 21, 2024, is Staff Sgt. Anthony Michael Jones, a 12-year WVNG veteran. Coming from Van, West Virginia, Jones is a 12N Horizontal Construction Engineer and an instructor at the 197th Regional Training Institute at Camp Dawson in Kingwood.

Jones holds a bachelor’s degree in P.E./Health Education from WVU and two master’s degrees from Marshall University. With 22 years of experience in education, he now trains Soldiers and fellow instructors at the RTI.

Inspired by a recruiter while serving as a principal, Jones joined the Guard and values the camaraderie and lifelong friendships he has developed. His proudest moment was returning home from deployment to surprise his family.

Passionate about the outdoors, Jones enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, and playing guitar. He aims to achieve the rank of E9 and retire by age 55, while also transferring his Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to his children.

Jones’s advice to potential enlistees: “It has been one of the best decisions I have ever made. The benefits and the opportunity to serve our great nation are well worth it.”
