DUNBAR, W.Va. –
The West Virginia National Guard's All-Hazards team collaborated with the Dunbar Safe Community, Police Department and Fire Department for their annual Junior Police Academy held at Dunbar Middle School July 8-12, 2024.
“It’s wonderful seeing kids overcome their fears during the activities and completing the assigned tasks,” said WVNG Sgt. 1st Class Brad Convery, whose daughter has participated in the camp the last three years.
“Our overall goal is to teach these kids the core values of becoming a productive member of the community and to see how one person can’t change this world, but by working together, we can,” said Lt. Mike Lester.
Starting Monday, 38 middle school students kicked off the week with inspiring words from Dunbar Mayor Elliot Scott, Police Chief Brian Oxley, and Fire Chief Jason Burger. The day continued with a modified physical fitness test, including four laps around the DMS track, pushups and pullups. Convery led the physical training sessions, motivating and guiding the students through their daily workouts.
Wednesday, seven members of the WVNG All-Hazards team set up a high line/zip line across the lake at Wine Cellar Park. The team performed numerous safety checks, double-checking harnesses and helmets, and provided a rescue boat on standby in the water.
The All-Hazards team, along with fire and police department members and volunteers with Dunbar Safe Communities, ensured a safe and fun experience for the kids. During lunch, provided by the All-Hazards team and cooked by family, everyone took a well-deserved break before resuming activities.
On Friday the academy held a graduation ceremony.
The 2024 Jr. Police Academy was led by Lt. Mike Lester of the Dunbar Police, Alex Cox of the Fire Department, and Jim Malcomb of the Safe Community. The academy provides a unique and engaging experience for Dunbar's youth, teaching them about various aspects of public service and exposing them to potential career paths. It allows the students to see how different agencies work together as a cohesive unit while understanding the distinct roles each agency plays.
