CHARLESTON, W.Va. –

Unit – 153rd Public Affairs Detachment
MOS – 46 - Sierra Mass Communications Specialist
Job Title – Public Affairs NCO
Hometown: Pittsburgh PA but I grew up in Jonesboro, Arkansas
Civilian job: Video Production and Marketing
How long have you served in the WVARNG: 11 years
Education: Some college but no degree, I studied Theatre, Psychology and Graphic Design
Hobbies: Paddle boarding, Kayaking, Climbing, playing guitar and painting
Goals (military or civilian): Traveling to as many interesting places as I possibly can.
I am proudest of: My two sons, they turned out to be really nice guys with big hearts.
The best day of my life: September 14th, 2001: I was studying theatre in Manhattan and the Twin Towers had been attacked three days earlier. I was able to go to ground zero as a Red Cross volunteer and help deliver food to the men and women going through the rubble of the towers. It was the best day of my life because it was the first time I realized what it meant to be selfless and serve others. So although a sad time, it was the single greatest moment of growth I’ve had. It was what inspired me to join the Army, it still inspires me when I look back at everyone helping each other get through those times. It really made me proud to be an American and take responsibility for my part in the human condition.
Favorite moment in the WVNG: Serving in Jordan at the Eager Lion exercise. It was a great opportunity to work with Multi National Forces and share our unit’s experience and knowledge with them. We were also able to gain valuable insights into how our allies conduct journalism and mass communications throughout the Middle East.
What do you like best about the WVNG: The West Virginia National Guard has always felt like a family. From the top down, there is a real focus on the soldiers’ health and welfare. In large organizations it’s easy to feel small or ineffective but I can say, unequivocally, that is not the case in West Virginia. At all stages of my career I have felt respected by my peers, leadership and subordinates. I have always felt recognized for the knowledge I bring to the table as well as supported when I don’t have the answers or I am weak in a task. It’s a really great community to be part of, and I’m proud to serve with my fellow WV National Guard Members.
