West VIrginia National Guard

SPC Amia Adkins, a horizontal construction engineer with the 821st Engineer Company, is this month's Soldier Spotlight.

Civilian job: Surgical Assistant at Mountain State Oral and Facial Surgery
How long have you served in the WVARNG: 5 years
Education: Associates in Medical Assisting
Hobbies: Hiking, Crossfit, and Art
Goals (military or civilian): To become a Dentist and an Officer.
I am proudest of: Being the first person in my family to serve in the military and graduate college.
The best day of my life : I view each day greater than the last, because tomorrow isn’t promised. I'm constantly living the best day of my life.
Favorite moment in the WVNG : Graduation day at basic training, nothing compares to the look of pride on my mother's face.
What do you like best about the WVNG : That no matter what issue I encounter in life whether it be pertaining to a personal or professional dilemma, I can count on my peers and leadership for support and guidance. Also that they know that they trust in me to provide them with the same diligence.

Members of the West Virginia National Guard conduct debris removal missions in Logan and Migo counties, West Virginia, March 4, 2025. West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey declared a State of Emergency on February 15, 2025, in 14 counties due to a widespread flooding event that impacted the southern coal fields of the Mountain State. Guardsmen have been assisting local officials and volunteers since to distribute relief items including food, water, and cleaning supplies to residents impacted by flooding, and assisting local officials and responder agencies with missions such as debris removal. James “Jim” Seward as he assumed the role and responsibilities of The Adjutant General for the West Virginia National Guard at McLaughlin Air National Guard base in Charleston, West Virginia, Apr. 2, 2025. An assumption of command ceremony is a time-honored tradition which recognizes the responsibility, authority and accountability of a commander.
