CHARLESTON, W.Va. –
Sgt. Jonathon Whitlock, a Soldier with the 821st Horizontal Construction Company, is the May 2019 Soldier Spotlight. From the small town of Leivasy, Whitlock said the thing he likes best is the brotherhood he now has with some of the men and women in the Guard.
Hometown: My hometown is a little town called Leivasy. If you blink, you’ll miss it.
Job Title: I have many jobs in the military 12N, 12W, Identifier C4, UMO, Suicide prevention NCO, Team Leader, and Preacher.
Civilian Job: Only employed by the WVARNG.
How long have you served with the WVARNG: I have served with the WVARNG for 9 years.
Education: I have some college towards a Mechanical Engineering degree. I also would like to get a degree in business or finance.
Hobbies: My hobbies range from wood working to working on my ole truck to fishing and hunting. I like to watch movies; I am a huge Marvel fan. Honestly, I like to do anything that includes my friends or family. I just like to have fun. I think that’s important in life.
Goals: My goal with the Army are to either become an officer or a pilot. My goal for life is to become financially free.
I am proudest of: My proudest moment in the WVARNG was becoming an NCO. I was once told that if I didn’t like something I was to get in a position to change it. I believe that me getting in leadership positions is what I am proudest of in my life to make a difference in someone else’s life.
The best day of my life: The best day of my life. This is a tough one to answer. I would have to say when I finally raised all the money for me to go to Australia as a People to People Student Ambassador.
Favorite moment in the WVARNG: My favorite moment was a very tragic moment for West Virginia. I got on flood duty orders in 2016 three days after the flood had hit WV. I stayed on those orders until they ended in 2017. My favorite moments with the Guard were those helping people with their losses.
What do you like best about the WVARNG: The thing I like best about the Guard is probably something that is used loosely for most people. The thing I like best is the brotherhood I now have with some of the men and women in the Guard. I have met many men and woman that are outstanding people which taught me different lessons about life.
