KINGWOOD, W.Va. –
The 26th Annual West Virginia National Guard Kids Kamp kicked off June 24th and ran through June 29th, 2018 at Camp Dawson, West Virginia.
Camp began this year with an official ceremony honoring the changing of the name from "Kids Kamp" to "Camp Conley" in honor of retired Command Sergeant Major Gary Conley for all his hard work and dedication over the years for the West Virginia National Guard Youth Programs.
“Gary has been a great supporter and part of the camp since its inception in 1991. There is no more fitting tribute than to rename the camp after him and honor his service to the families of our Soldiers and Airmen in the West Virginia National Guard,” said Maj. Gen. James Hoyer, WVNG Adjutant General.
Conley explained that it was during the Desert Storm era when the state family council wanted to do something to give the kids of military being deployed something to do for that summer. “That's how we started this camp,” he said.
"Looking at the hours that Gary Conley has put in not only this year, but compounded over the 26 years is really mind-blowing," said Army Lt. Col. Wally Hatfield, WVNG Youth Camp Assistant Director and military lead of Camp Conley.
"It's a great honor that it was named after me," said Conley. "It's just a rewarding sight and feeling to see these kids do what they do."
Camp Conley provides a week-long, engaging environment while educating kids on military culture. The main goal of the camp is to increase a camper’s understanding and connection with their parents military service.
Camp Conley and Youth Leaders Camp are schedule to operate again next year June 23 - 28, 2019.
