Brig. Gen. Murray E. "Gene" Holt

Brig. Gen. Murray E. “Gene” Holt is the Assistant Adjutant General – Army and commander of the West Virginia Army National Guard.  As the Assistant Adjutant General, he provides command and control over all Army National Guard forces assigned to the state and is the principal advisor to the Adjutant General on all matters related to the Army National Guard.

Brig. Gen. Holt enlisted in the West Virginia Army National Guard in 1985 and received his commission through the Reserve Officer Training Corps at West Virginia State University in May of 1990 after completing his undergraduate education in accounting. Brig. Gen. Holt began his military career as a platoon leader in the 3664th Maintenance Company and later as a press officer and commander of the 153rd Public Affairs Detachment. Since that time, he has served in the engineer branch in a myriad of positions including construction management officer, engineer equipment officer, S-4 for the 111th Engineer Brigade, commander of the 111th Engineer Brigade and 1092nd Engineer Battalion. Holt’s most recent assignment was Chief of Staff, West Virginia Army National Guard.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 

Brig. Gen. Holt’s awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal with 2-Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Commendation Medal with 4-Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Achievement Medal with 3-Oak Leaf Clusters; Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal; National Defense Medal; Iraq Campaign Medal with Campaign Star; Global War On Terrorism Expeditionary Medal; Global War on Terrorism Service Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Armed Forces Reserve Medal; Army Service Medal; Army Overseas Service Medal; Army Reserve Component Overseas Training with Numeral 2; Meritorious Unit Commendation; the West Virginia Emergency Service Ribbon; the West Virginia State Service Ribbon; the West Virginia Service Ribbon; and the West Virginia National Guard Minuteman Ribbon.

Brig. Gen. Holt is a graduate of the U.S. Army War College and holds a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies, a Master of Business Administration from West Virginia University and a Bachelor of Science Degree from West Virginia State University.
